How the snow day score works
1. Your location
Your ZIP or postal code is converted to coordinates — US and Canada supported.
2. Live forecast
We pull the next 24 hours of hourly data: snowfall, temperature, and wind speed.
3. Transparent score
Snowfall sets the base score; extreme cold, high wind, and 4–7 AM snow adjust it. Nothing hidden.

Snow day questions, answered
Will there be a snow day tomorrow?
Enter your ZIP code above — the calculator pulls the live 24-hour forecast for your area (expected snowfall, overnight low, wind, and 4–7 AM conditions) and turns it into a transparent probability score. Scores above 75% mean a snow day is very likely; below 20% means unlikely.
How many inches of snow does it take to cancel school?
There is no fixed number — it varies by district, road conditions, and timing. As a rough rule, many US districts start considering closures around 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) of overnight snow, but extreme cold (below about −15°C / 5°F) or high winds can close schools with much less snow. Our scoring model reflects this: snowfall sets the base score, cold and wind add to it.
How accurate is the snow day calculator?
It is an estimate based on live forecast data, not a guarantee — school districts weigh road crews, bus safety, and building conditions too. Forecasts are most reliable 12–24 hours out, so check again the evening before and early morning. Read our full accuracy breakdown for the honest details.
Is the snow day calculator free?
Yes — completely free, no account, no signup. We use free public weather data (Open-Meteo) and free geocoding, so there is nothing to pay for.
Does it work for Canada?
Yes. Switch to the CA tab and enter your postal code (e.g. K1A 0B1). The same live-forecast scoring applies across Canada and the US.
Why do districts sometimes stay open when snow was predicted?
Because the final call weighs more than snowfall: plowed main roads, timing (snow stopping before dawn), and whether buses can run safely. Our score estimates the weather side of that decision — the district decides the rest.
